Merchants Guild

The Merchants Guild is an overall organization that represents the interests of the guilds and independent merchants of Pegbarrow. The Merchants Guild itself is more a super-guild where the guild masters of each individual guild convene, argue, and generally try to make each others lives more difficult. As a bloc they elect thirteen of their members to the City Council, as well as hold Pegbarrows official position of endowing merchants with trading rights within the city walls, as well as creating entirely new guilds. The former is common, the later extremely rare with the most recent example being the Taverners Guild fifty years ago.

The current membership includes:

  • Apothecaries
  • Armourers & Brasiers (armour-makers and workers in brass)
  • Bakers
  • Barbers (also surgeons and dentists)
  • Basketmakers
  • Blacksmiths
  • Bowyers (longbow makers)
  • Brewers
  • Broderers (embroiderers)
  • Butchers
  • Carpenters
  • Clothworkers
  • Cordwainers (workers in fine leather)
  • Curriers (dressers of tanned leather)
  • Cutlers (makers of knives and other metal tools)
  • Dyers
  • Farriers (shoers of horses)
  • Fishmongers
  • Fletchers (arrow makers)
  • Goldsmiths
  • Loriners (stirrups and other harness for horses)
  • Masons
  • Mercers (a loose association of general merchants)
  • Needlemakers
  • Plaisterers (plasterers)
  • Plumbers
  • Poulters
  • Saddlers
  • Salters
  • Scriveners (writers of court letters and legal documents)
  • Skinners
  • Tallow chandlers (candle makers)
  • Taverners (tavern owners and innkeeps)
  • Upholders (upholsterers)
  • Vintners (purveyors of wine and other spirits)
  • Wax Chandlers (candle makers)
  • Weavers
  • Wheelwrights
  • Woolmen (winders and packers of wool)

As a rule the guilds only control membership within the city walls by right and law, but will make some effort to ensure providers of similar services outside of the city walls meet some minimum standards of work.
